City of Laredo Issues a Citywide Boil Water Notice

Laredo, Texas — The City of Laredo is notifying the community of a Boil Water Notice (BWN) effective immediately due to the detection of E. coli in the water system. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has required the City of Laredo to issue this citywide notice and residents are advised to boil their water prior to consumption as a precautionary measure (e.g., washing hands/face, brushing teeth, drinking, etc.) until further notice. Based on sample results, Laredo’s PWS has exceeded the E. coli Maximum Contaminant Level (EMCL).

“As a Doctor, I want to advise the public that the health and safety of the public is paramount, and for that reason, the City of Laredo is taking every precautionary measure until further information is known, especially the extent of the boil water notice and any associated health concerns,” said Mayor Dr. Victor D. Trevino. “For now the public is advised to follow the City of Laredo’s recommended guidelines in the boil water notice. We will be keeping the public informed as this information develops over time.”

More details will be shared shortly as they materialize with TCEQ and the City of Laredo. Various departments will begin to put together bottled water distributions and a notification with the sites will be shared soon.

The City of Laredo ensures that the procedure for BWN will be put into action and when it is no longer necessary to boil the water, the City of Laredo officials will notify customers when it is safe for human consumption.

Important Do’s and Don’ts

Do’s:

1. Boil Water Before Use: Bring water to a rolling boil for at least one minute before using it for drinking, cooking, or brushing teeth. Boiling effectively kills E. coli and other harmful bacteria.
2. Showering and Bathing: It is safe for healthy adults to shower, but avoid swallowing any water. Consider using bottled water for sponge baths for young children or those with weakened immune systems to reduce the risk of accidental ingestion.
3. Safe Water for Pets: Provide pets with boiled or bottled water for drinking to ensure they do not consume contaminated water. Pets can be susceptible to E. coli, and some strains may be transmissible back to humans.
4. Handwashing: Continue washing hands with soap and tap water, but follow with a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol for additional protection.

Don’ts:

1. Do Not Drink Tap Water: Until further notice, do not consume tap water directly or use it for food preparation without boiling it first.
2. Avoid Using Ice Made from Tap Water: Discard any ice made with tap water after the boil notice was issued. Use boiled or bottled water to make new ice.
3. Do Not Use Tap Water for Cleaning Contact Lenses: Contact lenses should not be rinsed with tap water. Use sterile saline or disinfectant solutions specifically designed for contact lenses.
4. Avoid Water Play for Children: Do not allow children to play with sprinklers, wading pools, or other water activities that could involve ingestion of tap water.

La Ciudad de Laredo Emite un Aviso de Hervir el Agua

Laredo, Texas – La Ciudad de Laredo notifica a la comunidad sobre un Aviso de Hervir el Agua (Boil Water Notice, BWN) que entrará en vigencia de inmediato debido a la detección de E. coli en el sistema de agua. La Comisión de Calidad Ambiental de Texas (Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, TCEQ) ha requerido que la ciudad de Laredo emita este aviso para toda la ciudad y se recomienda a los residentes que hiervan el agua antes de consumirla como medida de precaución (por ejemplo, lavarse las manos/la cara, cepillarse los dientes, beber, etc.) hasta nuevo aviso. Según los resultados de las muestras, el sistema de agua de Laredo ha excedido el Nivel Máximo de Contaminante (EMCL) de E. coli.

“Como médico, quiero informar al público que la salud y la seguridad del público son primordiales y, por esa razón, la ciudad de Laredo está tomando todas las medidas de precaución hasta que se conozca más información, especialmente el alcance del aviso de hervir el agua y cualquier problema de salud asociado”, dijo el alcalde Dr. Victor D. Trevino. “Por ahora, se recomienda al público que siga las pautas recomendadas por la Ciudad de Laredo en el aviso de hervir el agua. Mantendremos informado al público a medida que esta información se desarrolle con el tiempo”.

En breve se compartirán más detalles a medida que se materialicen con TCEQ y la Ciudad de Laredo. Varios departamentos comenzarán a organizar las distribuciones de agua embotellada y pronto se compartirá una notificación con las locaciones.

La Ciudad de Laredo asegura que se pondrá en marcha el procedimiento para BWN y cuando ya no sea necesario hervir el agua, los funcionarios de la Ciudad de Laredo notificarán a los clientes cuando sea segura para el consumo humano.

Qué hacer y qué no hacer

Qué hacer:

1. Hervir el agua antes de usarla: Lleve el agua a ebullición durante al menos un minuto antes de usarla para beber, cocinar o cepillarse los dientes. Hervirla mata eficazmente la bacteria E. coli y otras bacterias dañinas.
2. Ducharse y bañarse: Es seguro para los adultos sanos ducharse, pero evite tragar agua. Considere usar agua embotellada para bañar con esponja a los niños pequeños o a las personas con sistemas inmunológicos debilitados para reducir el riesgo de ingestión accidental.
3. Agua segura para las mascotas: Proporcione a las mascotas agua hervida o embotellada para beber para asegurarse de que no consuman agua contaminada. Las mascotas pueden ser susceptibles a la E. coli y algunas cepas pueden transmitirse a los humanos.
4. Lavado de manos: continúe lavándose las manos con agua del grifo y jabón, pero luego use un desinfectante para manos que contenga al menos un 60 % de alcohol para mayor protección.

Qué no hacer:

1. No beber agua del grifo: Hasta nuevo aviso, no consuma agua del grifo directamente ni la use para preparar alimentos sin hervirla primero.
2. Evite usar hielo hecho con agua del grifo: deseche el hielo hecho con agua del grifo después de que se haya emitido el aviso de hervir el agua. Use agua hervida o embotellada para hacer hielo nuevo.
3. No use agua del grifo para limpiar los lentes de contacto: los lentes de contacto no deben enjuagarse con agua del grifo. Use soluciones salinas o desinfectantes estériles diseñadas específicamente para lentes de contacto.
4. Evite que los niños jueguen con agua: no permita que los niños jueguen con aspersores, piscinas para niños u otras actividades acuáticas que puedan implicar la ingestión de agua del grifo.
